Frank Vogel, the former Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers head coach, has officially joined the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff as a consultant. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd confirmed the news during the team’s training camp in Las Vegas. NBA insider Marc Stein first reported Vogel’s involvement with the Mavericks.
Vogel, who led the Lakers to an NBA championship in 2020, joins the Mavericks after a brief stint with the Suns. He was hired by Phoenix in June 2023, guiding them to a 49–33 record and a playoff berth as the No. 6 seed. However, after being swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, Vogel was dismissed by the Suns in May 2024 after just one season.
Kidd, who served as an assistant under Vogel during the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, joked about the process of bringing Vogel to Dallas. “It took a lot of begging,” Kidd said, “but he was talked into it, and I’m happy he said yes.”
Vogel’s addition to the Mavericks comes at a crucial time, as the team is preparing for the upcoming season. His experience, particularly his success with the Lakers, brings a wealth of knowledge to Dallas’ coaching staff. The Mavericks are looking to build on last season’s success, and Vogel’s defensive expertise could be key in helping them achieve their goals.
As a coaching consultant, Vogel will likely play a behind-the-scenes role with the Mavericks. His presence, however, is expected to influence the team’s overall strategy and preparation, especially with Kidd leaning on his former mentor for advice.
Vogel’s hiring marks another chapter in his extensive coaching career, which has included stints with the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Lakers, and Suns.
