Klay Thompson, the Dallas Mavericks’ newest addition, shared his thoughts after completing the first day of training camp with his new team.
“It was great,” Thompson told reporters. He expressed relief after shaking off the initial nerves and getting acclimated to the team’s defensive schemes.
Thompson described the experience as exhilarating, noting that it felt good to compete on the court and hear valuable feedback from the coaching staff.
When asked about joining a new team and environment, Thompson compared the transition to switching schools. “It feels really good. It’s a feeling you want to embrace because it’s so rare to get those butterflies as a player.”
The four-time NBA champion admitted the experience was refreshing, especially after spending years with the Golden State Warriors.
Thompson was also asked about his new teammate, Luka Doncic, with whom he will now share the court instead of opposing him.
“Luka is one of the best players with the ball in his hands in the world,” Thompson said. He added that he looks forward to benefitting from Doncic’s playmaking, as the Mavericks’ star is known for generating great looks for his teammates.
On the defensive side, Thompson acknowledged the challenge that comes with facing both Doncic and Kyrie Irving in practice, calling it a “nightmare” to defend such dynamic players.
Thompson’s presence on the Mavericks is expected to boost the team’s perimeter shooting and overall offense. The Mavericks, led by head coach Jason Kidd, are hoping that Thompson’s championship experience will blend well with their existing roster and lead to a deep playoff run.
As the Mavericks continue through training camp, all eyes will be on how quickly Thompson adjusts to his new team and the chemistry he builds with Doncic and Irving.
The upcoming season presents a unique opportunity for Thompson to thrive in a fresh setting while contributing to Dallas’ championship aspirations.
