During Lakers Media Day, D’Angelo Russell took a moment to reflect on his performance last season, apologizing for what he described as a lack of professionalism. Russell, who had a standout season for the Los Angeles Lakers, acknowledged that he fell short in certain areas off the court.
Russell admitted that his attitude and focus were not always where they should have been. “I think I really wanted to apologize in the sense of showing a lack of professionalism at times,” Russell said, via Corey Hansford of Lakers Nation. He added that there were moments when he did not put the team first, and he aims to improve his mindset this season.
The Lakers point guard, who enjoyed a career-best season last year, breaking the franchise’s record for most three-pointers made in a single season, is now focused on improving in other areas. Although he received praise from new head coach JJ Redick for his shooting, Russell is prioritizing his leadership and consistency.
Redick, known as one of the NBA’s most accurate shooters, has high hopes for Russell this season. However, Russell’s goals go beyond offensive performance. He emphasized the importance of staying mature and professional regardless of the ups and downs throughout the season. “Keeping that maturity and professionalism throughout the year no matter the ups and downs,” Russell stated.
As one of the team’s veterans, Russell recognizes his responsibility to set a positive example for his teammates. He also revealed that his primary focus for the upcoming season is to improve on the defensive end, where he feels he fell short in earning the trust of his coaches.
Russell was candid about his desire to gain more trust from Coach Redick in defensive situations. Last season, he was frequently subbed out during critical defensive possessions, which affected his confidence. “Hold myself more accountable on the defensive end,” he said. “When you get subbed out of the game for offensive-defensive possessions, obviously that shows where your trust is with your coach in your abilities.”
Russell is committed to improving his defensive game, noting that he wants to prove his capabilities on both ends of the floor. “Just trying to gain that trust from Coach defensively,” he added. His aim is to show up consistently, whether it’s in practice, preseason, or regular season games, and earn Redick’s confidence.
This renewed focus on defense marks a shift in Russell’s approach as he enters the upcoming season. While his offensive skills have never been in question, he understands that a well-rounded game is essential to contribute fully to the team’s success.
