Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic opened up about his new teammate Russell Westbrook during the Denver Nuggets’ media day.
Jokic acknowledged the previous tension between the two players when facing each other.
“Of course we didn’t have a good relationship on the court – we were fighting a lot and talking back and forth,” Jokic admitted.
Despite their competitive clashes, Jokic expressed optimism about Westbrook’s addition to the Nuggets.
He praised Westbrook’s leadership and work ethic, particularly off the court.
“I know who he is a little bit outside of the court – great teammate, vocal leadership, the guy who wants to listen,” Jokic said.
The Serbian superstar also emphasized Westbrook’s positive influence in the gym and his potential to elevate the team.
“The guy who you want to follow in the gym, so I think he’s a great player for us,” Jokic added.
Westbrook, who signed a two-year deal with the Nuggets this offseason, also spoke highly of Jokic.
The former MVP expressed his excitement about playing alongside Jokic, calling it an honor.
Jokic and Westbrook’s dynamic will be an interesting storyline as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season.
Their past competitive history contrasts with their new collaboration on the court.
Jokic believes that Westbrook’s presence will benefit the Nuggets in multiple ways.
“I think he’s going to bring us all the good stuff,” Jokic concluded.
For his part, Westbrook seems equally eager to prove his value to the defending NBA champions.
