Adrian Wojnarowski, renowned NBA insider, recently left ESPN to become the general manager of the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure University.
He expanded on his retirement from the media industry at an introductory press conference, revealing his decision to join his alma mater.
“This is no retirement job for me,” Wojnarowski said, emphasizing his continued drive and competitive spirit.
He made it clear that his move to St. Bonaventure was about winning and upholding the university’s values.
“I know what it is to compete at a high level and that is why I am here,” he said.
Wojnarowski, widely known for his coverage of the NBA, highlighted the unique bond he has with St. Bonaventure.
He described the university as a “magical place” and reflected on his desire to be with the Bonnies.
“Someone would always ask me, where do you want to be for the opening of NBA training camps?” he noted.
Instead of Boston, Los Angeles, or Oklahoma City, Wojnarowski’s answer was clear this year.
“I wanted to be with the Bonnies on the opening day of practices,” he stated.
He expressed his dedication to continuing coach Mark Schmidt’s winning culture at St. Bonaventure.
Wojnarowski emphasized the university’s commitment to competing with the top programs in the nation.
“Our leadership is sending a clear message to everyone – St. Bonaventure is committed,” he said.
He acknowledged the changing landscape of college sports but vowed to maintain the school’s championship standards.
Reports have indicated that Wojnarowski turned down a lucrative offer from ESPN to take this position.
When discussing this decision, Wojnarowski explained that it wasn’t about what he was giving up.
“I thought about what I was gaining and I thought about being back here,” he said.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I’ve gained in this deal. I’m the winner in this deal.”
Wojnarowski made it clear that the decision to leave ESPN was not difficult for him.
“I was ready to make a change,” he said, referencing discussions with coach Schmidt and Athletic Director Bob Beretta.
He continued by explaining how easy the choice was, saying, “It wasn’t a hard decision. It really wasn’t.”
Wojnarowski said that he asked himself multiple times which job he preferred, and the answer was always St. Bonaventure.
He affirmed his pride in returning to the university and serving the basketball program.
“I’m honored that they created this opportunity for me to be here,” he said.
Wojnarowski’s new role marks a major transition from his successful career in sports media to college basketball management.
