Byron Scott, former Lakers player and coach, has updated his opinion on the Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to hire JJ Redick as their new head coach.
Initially, Scott was critical of the move, expressing concerns about Redick’s lack of coaching experience at the professional level.
However, Scott has since changed his mind, particularly after learning more about the coaching staff Redick has assembled.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Scott admitted he felt the Lakers made a mistake by giving the coaching reins to someone with no bench experience.
“I got a lot of respect for him because of what he’s done in the league, but when it comes to coaching, people wanted an experienced coach,” Scott explained.
Scott’s outlook shifted once Redick brought in seasoned assistants, including Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks, both of whom have significant head coaching experience.
McMillan has coached multiple teams, including the Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks, while Brooks led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA Finals.
The addition of experienced coaches made Scott feel more confident in Redick’s chances of success in Los Angeles.
“You got some guys who have head coaching experience, who’ve been on that bench before, who’ve won championships on that bench,” Scott noted.
Scott now believes Redick is in a much better position to lead the Lakers, particularly with the strong support from his assistant coaches.
“I’m excited. I think JJ’s going to do well with the staff that he has and the players that he has,” Scott said.
Scott also highlighted the importance of the Lakers’ star players, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, staying healthy for the team to thrive under Redick’s leadership.
He emphasized that the Lakers’ success hinges on keeping their key players available throughout the season.
Despite his initial reservations, Scott has become optimistic about Redick’s ability to succeed as the Lakers’ head coach.
Scott also hinted at future coaching plans of his own, teasing that something major could be on the horizon for his career.
For now, Scott is focused on seeing how Redick and his new staff will navigate the challenges of the upcoming NBA season.
