Lakers to honor Jerry West with No. 44 jersey bands

The Los Angeles Lakers will honor late franchise icon Jerry West by wearing commemorative No. 44 bands on their jerseys this season.

The team announced this tribute alongside plans to celebrate West during their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22, per Khobi Price.

West, who passed away on June 12, 2024, at the age of 86, left an indelible mark on the Lakers franchise. Known as “Mr. Clutch,” West was a key figure in the team’s history, both as a player and executive.

During his illustrious playing career, West was an NBA champion in 1972 and a 14-time All-Star. His contributions on the court were complemented by his impact off it, where he served as an executive and was instrumental in building championship-winning teams.

West’s career achievements include being named to the All-NBA First Team 12 times and earning a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The commemorative bands will be prominently displayed on the left shoulder of each Lakers jersey throughout the season.
