The NBA has announced a significant expansion of the Coach’s Challenge rule, approved by the league’s Board of Governors.
Under the new regulations, coaches can now use the challenge on out-of-bounds plays to review whether a foul should have been called during the play.
This adjustment aims to improve the accuracy of officiating decisions in critical moments. The change follows a notable incident involving Kyrie Irving and Jaden McDaniels, where a missed foul call on Irving led to Dallas gaining possession of the ball.
Previously, the Coach’s Challenge was limited to certain situations, including goaltending, basket interference, and personal fouls. The expanded rule will now allow teams to challenge calls where the ball goes out of bounds, and a potential foul occurred during the same play.
