Crvena Zvezda edges Bayern to Top 16 spot, Euroleague hangover

Crvena Zvezda secured their progression to the Euroleague Top 16 after downing Bayern Munich 85-76 in Group A.

Red Star finished the regular season with a 5-5 record; the loss knocked Bayern to fifth place and it will continue its European campaign in the Eurocup.

Quincy Miller led from the front for Red Star as he tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds as his side rallied from a 65-56 deficit after three quarters to hold Bayern to just 11 points in the final 10 minutes for the win.

Dusko Savanovic led Bayern with 19 points.

In Group C, Lokomotiv Kuban pipped Barcelona to top spot, winning 78-74 after coming back from a 60-54 deficit heading into the final period.

Malcolm Delaney paced Lokomotiv with 19 points.

“I think we just stayed resilient through the game, even though they made a few runs,” Delaney said.

“We just proved how much better we got compared to our first game in Barcelona. They did exactly the same thing. But we couldn’t close the game then. And this time we just got the stops when we needed them and in the fourth quarter shared the ball, found the right guys in the right spots and they were hitting big shots.”

The other game in Group C saw Pinar Karisyaka Izmir sign off from their maiden Euroleague season with an 83-81 win at Stelmet Zielona Gora.

Justin Carter led the winners with 27 points but both teams will drop down to the Eurocup Last 32 in the next round.

In Group B, Anadolu Efes secured second spot in the pool after they defeated Olympiacos 81-68 in Piraeus.

Dario Saric collected 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Thomas Heurtel had 13 points and five assists to lead Efes, as they finish at 6-4 for the second spot in the group.

Olympiacos had already locked up first place in the group, but saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in falling to 8-2 despite 19 points from Daniel Hackett.

Limoges ended their Euroleague season with a 77-69 win at EA7 Milano as both teams now prepare for the Eurocup Last 32.

Behind Nobel Boungou-Colo’s 21 points, Limoges opened a 14-point margin late in the third quarter, and the hosts never came closer than 4 points the rest of the way.

In the race for first place CSKA Moscow got the better of Unicaja Malaga 88-76 top finish top of Group D.

Nando De Colo paced CSKA with 18 points.
