Steph Curry has expressed his thoughts on his recent one-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors.
The extension is worth $62.6 million and ensures Curry will stay with the Warriors for three more years, totaling nearly $178 million.
In an interview with Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, Curry described the extension as a chance to focus solely on basketball and the upcoming season.
“It’s not different from my perspective,” Curry said. “You have an appreciation for the position and the opportunity and the support from people who’ve been with you on the journey.”
Curry has always indicated a desire to spend his entire career with the Warriors.
“I’ve always said I wanted to play for one team my whole career,” Curry added. “So it’s good to get (the extension) question out of the way and give complete focus to basketball and to the season.”
The contract extension aligns with the expiration of Draymond Green’s contract, marking a potentially pivotal period for the Warriors.
Curry’s decision to sign now reflects a strategic move to maximize his impact during the Warriors’ remaining championship window.
By choosing a one-year extension, Curry avoids tying himself into a long-term deal that could affect the Warriors’ flexibility.
Instead, Curry opted for a shorter deal, symbolizing a commitment to immediate goals rather than extending his career earnings.
Curry’s choice emphasizes his focus on winning a fifth championship and continuing his legacy with Golden State.
“It’s still about winning,” Curry said. “And taking the steps necessary to give ourselves a chance. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectation hasn’t changed.”
As Curry approaches the latter stages of his career, this extension could be his final opportunity to secure another championship.
The Warriors missed the playoffs in 2024 and face significant challenges in the upcoming season.
