Here’s Utah Jazz 2024 #10 pick Cody Williams giving a detailed breakdown of what helps him make reads/see rotations on defense.
(via The 3-Point Conversion):
“I think the biggest thing is just seeing man & ball and also seeing the other players. A lot of times it happens fast, they’ll hit it up and they’ll go into a Pistol action. Pistol actions happen fast. So it’s just kinda looking for cues, seeing the guy running up, seeing man & ball, and then just anticipating what he’s gonna do, especially with the personnel out there. Like if you see a guard going to set a Pistol: he’s probably gonna pop, because you want a catch-and-shoot three. And then if the big’s setting it: he’s probably gonna roll, so I have to be there early and be the low man. So just seeing personnel, reading it, all comes with playing more basketball. But just kinda seeing the personnel, seeing man & ball, that’s kinda what helps me make those reads defensively and see my rotations.”
