Los Angeles Clippers’ president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, expressed disappointment after Team USA opted to withdraw Kawhi Leonard from the 2024 Paris Olympics roster.

Despite Leonard’s readiness and full participation in early practices, USA Basketball decided to prioritize his NBA season preparation over Olympic participation, a decision confirmed by the organization.

Derrick White, recently crowned NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, replaced Leonard on the Team USA roster.

In an interview, Frank conveyed his disappointment with the decision, emphasizing Leonard’s commitment and preparedness for international play.

“It was USAB’s call, and I was frankly very disappointed with the decision. Kawhi wanted to play, we wanted him to play,” Frank lamented.

“I was there at the first two practices. He looked very good, was a full participant at everything that they did. I wasn’t there for the third practice where ultimately that was the point where they decided to go in a different direction.

“I expressed them I really wished they would have given Kawhi more time. We have the benefit of having been around Kawhi for five years to see his body and see where he’s at. He looked good to time.”

“I know all the sacrifices he made in order to make this commitment to the Olympics. So it was very disappointing,” Frank added, underscoring Leonard’s dedication despite challenges.

Acknowledging USA Basketball’s need to manage player health and team dynamics, Frank expressed understanding while maintaining his disappointment.

“With that being said, I understand from USAB’s perspective that they have to look at what they feel is in the best interest of the team despite what I think. They’re also managing some other players who are also dealing with injuries. So I understand they have to do what’s best. We were really disappointed for Kawhi, and this is something we really wanted for him,” Frank emphasized, reflecting on Leonard’s potential Olympic debut.

The executive also expressed support for the national team, wishing for Team USA to win gold.
