Italy and Lithuania made strong starts in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, each securing an important victory.
Italy destroys Bahrain
Italy opened their campaign with an emphatic 114-53 victory over Bahrain in Group B, which also includes the hosts.
Gianmarco Pozzecco’s team dominated from the outset, jumping to an 11-2 lead early in the game after Wayne Chism got into foul trouble.
Italy’s offensive prowess continued to shine throughout the game, extending their lead to as much as 61 points in the final quarter.
They displayed a balanced attack with 39 assists on 45 made baskets and shot 60% from the field, including 11-of-27 from three-point range.
Veterans Danilo Gallinari and Nicolo Melli led the Italians in scoring with 14 points each.
Lithuania fends off Mexico’s late push
Lithuania held off a late surge from Mexico to secure a 96-84 victory in their opening Group A game.
After a slow start where Mexico took an early 9-0 lead, Lithuania rallied back with an 11-2 run to tie the game and eventually took control, leading 29-26 after the first quarter.
Lithuania’s dominance grew in the second half, building a lead of up to 25 points before securing the win.
They shot 56% from the field and capitalized on fast break opportunities, outscoring Mexico 24-2 in transition.
Marius Grigonis was the top performer for the winners with 21 points.
