Real Madrid’s Rudy Fernandez will miss two to three months of action

Rudy Fernandez is facing three months on the injured list, which puts Real Madrid’s hopes of qualifying for the Top 16 of the Euroleague in real jeopardy.

Fernandez did not feature in Sunday’s 99-92 win at Bilbao in the Liga Endesa due to back problems and further tests reveal that those problems will require him to miss the duration of the Euroleague regular season, as well as a large chunk of the Top 16, should Real Madrid advance.

Madrid, who captured the Euroleague crown last May are surprisingly languishing at the bottom of Group A this season with a 2-5 record and have failed to record a road win so far.

The current holders have fallen to Khimki, Fenerbahce, Strasbourg and most recently Crvena Zvezda on the road with their two victories both coming at home against Crvena Zvezda and Bayern Munich.

And to add to Real’s woes, the Spanish international also looks likely to miss the Copa del Rey, which is scheduled for February 18-21.

Real are currently third in the Liga Endesa with a 7-1 record behind Barcelona and leaders Valencia. They host UCAM Murcia in the league on Sunday but before that, face-off with Fenerbahce at the Barclaycard Center on Thursday night, fighting to save their Euroleague season.
