James Borrego, associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, has surfaced as a leading contender for the Detroit Pistons’ vacant head coaching position.

Following the Pistons’ decision to dismiss Monty Williams, Borrego’s candidacy has gained momentum in the team’s search for a new leader.

Borrego, who previously interviewed for coaching roles with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, brings a wealth of experience and strategic acumen to the table.

Known for his coaching prowess and ability to develop young talent, Borrego has garnered attention across the league for his contributions as an assistant coach.

Vincent Goodwill reported on X: “One of the names I’m hearing the Pistons will strongly consider: James Borrego, who’s interviewed with the Lakers and Cavs on their coaching openings, sources tell @YahooSports.”

Jake Fischer added further insight, noting Borrego’s recent role as lead assistant in New Orleans, where he collaborated closely with Pistons’ newly appointed president, Trajan Langdon.

Borrego’s familiarity with Langdon and his experience in mentoring young talent position him as a pivotal figure in Detroit’s coaching deliberations.
