After a five month suspension, FIBA have today reinstated the Russian Federation with immediate effect.
The lifting of the ban comes after the report by the FIBA Task Force – chaired by FIBA Europe Vice-President and FIBA Central Board member Cyriel Coomans – outlined that the three main issues which gave rise to the suspension had been dealt with by the Russian Basketball Federation in a very positive manner.
The RBF clarified its relationship with the VTB United League through the signature of an Agreement whereby the RBF acts as the sole governing body for basketball in Russia having the right to organise, supervise, endorse and/or assign the management of the Russian club competitions.
The Federation also held new elections on August 25 in a fair, democratic and transparent manner, supervised by the competent authorities in charge of sport in Russia and FIBA, as recently retired NBA forward and former CSKA Moscow player Andrei Kirilenko was elected as its new president.
And the Federation adopted new statutes last week, which comply with the FIBA general statutes and internal regulations.
Both Russia’s men’s and women’s teams did not qualify for next summer’s Olympics in the Brazilian city of Rio.
