Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins shared his insights ahead of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks.
Despite picking Boston as the favorite, Perkins expressed uncertainty due to the impactful presence of Luka Doncic.
In a recent conversation with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on Scoop B Radio, Perkins elaborated on the widespread admiration for Doncic among black Americans.
“To be honest with you, I really feel like this is a pick ‘em but I’m going with the Celtics in seven, okay? Going with the Celtics in seven but I’m not confident in that because of the play of Luka, Kyrie and the coaching of J-Kidd,” Perkins said.
“But I will say underappreciated Jaylen Brown has been ballin’ his ass off, okay? Let’s get that understood. Jayson Tautm has rised to the occasion. Derrick White, Jrue Holiday? We know what they’re bringing to the table. The reason why I’m so iffy is because of that damn Luka!”
He continued, “Look. Let me explain something to ya, I’ve been at AAU games this past weekend and all these parents and all these people — African American parents keep coming up to me saying, Luka! Luka! Luka!…
“Luka is invited to EVERY Black barbeque in America! Luka is invited to EVERY hood in America! I mean, he can walk in there 1 deep with no security and he’s good on EVERY side of town! [laughing]… because everybody adapts to his play. When you’re able to walk into hostile environments and call him every damn thing except a child of God and bust they ass the way that he’s been doing…”
Perkins acknowledges the challenges posed by Doncic’s stellar performances, recognizing his ability to win over audiences across various communities.
He added, “Ay man, I’m telling you this has been a JOY to watch! This is what the league has been missing and dammit Luka is giving it to us. All former players, fans that are around the league, the hoods… everybody! Everybody representin’ Luka right now. They love him!”
With Doncic leading the charge, the Mavericks have emerged as formidable contenders in the NBA Finals. His exceptional contributions on the court have solidified his status as a fan favorite and a respected figure within the league.
During the regular season, Doncic showcased his scoring prowess, averaging 33.9 points per game, securing the league’s top scorer title.
In the playoffs, he has continued to shine, averaging 28.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.
