Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv announced Monday that it has parted ways with head coach Guy Goodes after his full season plus one month on the bench.
Goodes will be replaced on an interim basis by assistant Avi Even while the team looks for a permanent candidate, the announcement said. After losing on the road 77-66 last week at Brose Baskets Bamberg, Maccabi’s record stands at 1-3 in Group D, marking the club’s worst start in the Euroleague this century. Maccabi led by 6 entering the fourth quarter of that game, but was outscored 26-9 the rest of the way to lose by double digits. In the Israeli League, Maccabi lost at home on Sunday by 83-88 to Maccabi Ashdod and fell to 3-2 and a tie for third place.
Goodes inherited head coaching duties at Maccabi in June 2014 from David Blatt, for whom Goodes was an assistant coach for four seasons starting in 2010 and culminating with Maccabi winning the Turkish Airlines Euroleague title in 2014. In his time at the head of Maccabi’s bench, Goodes went 17-14 in the Euroleague and reached the playoffs last season. He also won the Israeli Cup last season, but lost in the semifinals of the Israeli League playoffs.
Goodes first made a name for himself as one of Israel’s top guards in the late 1980s and 1990s, including eight seasons with Maccabi. Upon retiring as a player in 2004, Goodes promptly went into coaching. He debuted with Maccabi Rishon Lezion, first as an assistant before taking over the top spot, and then served as an assistant at Maccabi Tel Aviv for two seasons from 2006 and 2008 under Neven Spahija, Effi Birenboim and Zvika Sherf. Goodes coached Hapoel Jerusalem from 2008 to 2010 after which he returned to Tel Aviv.
