Detroit Pistons’ guard Evan Fournier has found a familiar coaching style in Monty Williams, drawing parallels between Williams and European basketball coaches.

Since joining the Pistons from the New York Knicks, Fournier has been impressed by Williams’ coaching approach, reminiscent of his experiences in European basketball.

“He’s one of the best teachers I’ve had since I’ve been a pro. He reminds me of the coaches in Europe. Usually in the NBA you install a system and players just play, you don’t have plays. He’s very detailed, especially defensively,” Fournier said about Williams, per Omari Sankofa II.

Fournier’s transition to the Pistons has seen him adapt to a new system under Williams, who prioritizes structured plays and defensive strategies reminiscent of European basketball.

With Fournier contributing 7.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game in his role with the Pistons, Williams’ coaching style has evidently resonated with the French guard.
