P.A.O.K. has had a rough start this season with 4 defeats in equal matches, and coach Soulis Markopoulos was looking for a change to boost his team’s game. Withing the weekend, it was officially announced that Sofoklis Schortsianitis will join the club in the center position, to add experience and size inside the paint.

The 30 years old player 2.06m. tall, begun his career back in 2000 from Iraklis BC, moved to Cantu and later Aris and in 2005 he went to Olympiacos where he stayed for 5 years. After these years he went to Israel for Maccabi Tel Aviv where he left two years later to become a Panathinaikos player for a single season to win the double. He returned to Israel and Maccabi where he won the Euroleague title in 2014. After that, he stayed one more year and moved to Red Star where he departed soon to become part of the PAOK roster. His palmare includes among others one Italy Super Cup in 2003, 3 championships in Israel and 4 domestic Cups and two Greek Cups, one with each rival

Sofoklis Schortsianitis is one of the most loved Greek players and has also played many years in the Greek National team, but his highlight was the 2006 World Cup where Greece finished second. However, in the semi-finals they eliminated U.S.A. with ‘Big Sofo’ dominating the paint against players like Dwight Howard and Elton Brand.

During the first years of his career he had a big weight problem that has slowed him down a bit but he seems capable of helping the club from Salonica to recover and regain the lost ground towards the play-off spots.
