Maverick Carter, the longtime manager and business partner of LeBron James, confessed to engaging in illegal betting on NBA games through an unauthorized bookmaker, as revealed in federal law enforcement documents.

Carter made this acknowledgment during an interview with federal agents in November 2021, part of their inquiry into bookie Wayne Nix. Nix has since pleaded guilty to charges related to overseeing an extensive offshore sports-betting operation.

The spokesperson, Adam Mendelsohn, clarified that in 2021, before the legalization of sports betting in 38 states and the District of Columbia, Carter was interviewed once by federal law enforcement in connection to the Wayne Nix investigation.

Mendelsohn emphasized that Carter was not the primary focus of the investigation, cooperated fully, faced no charges, and was not further contacted on the matter.

According to records, Carter and his legal representatives informed investigators that he placed around 20 bets on football and basketball games within a year. Each bet ranged from $5,000 to $10,000. Importantly, as a business manager, Carter is not prohibited from betting on NBA games.
