Velimir Perasovic’s contract with the Croatian national side not not be renewed following the nation’s tame exit at the hands of the Czech Republic in the Eurobasket second round.

Perasovic took over from Jasmin Repesa on March 3 with his deal ending at Eurobasket with a view to renew if the nation performed well this summer. But, a subpar showing in-front of their home fans in Zagreb, coupled with an early exit in Lille was not good enough.

“I think my time has come to go after the elimination and that a chance should be given to somebody new,” Perasovic said.

“We did not make a good result [at Eurobasket] and I understand that anyone who does deliver a good result should step down. I’ve done everything in good faith, even though I must have made a lot of mistakes.

“Before the game [against the Czech Republic] I was very optimistic, I saw a good team, concentrated and I expected us to play very well. Unfortunately, the opposite proved to be true.”

Perasovic now heads to Spain, as he prepares to lead Laboral Kutxa into the new Liga Endesa season.
