As the Golden State Warriors gear up for the upcoming season, head coach Steve Kerr is considering an unconventional defensive role for Klay Thompson.
Kerr plans to deploy Thompson as a defender against power forwards in pick-and-roll situations.
Kerr expressed his confidence in Thompson’s ability to take on this new challenge, citing the player’s physical strength and experience guarding post-up opponents after switches.
“Klay would guard the four man,” Kerr said, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “He’s so physically strong. He’s so used to guarding post-up players after switches.
“We think Klay can guard as a four this year. We’ll put him in coverage where he has to defend pick-and-roll as a four. We’re planning on doing that and seeing how he does.”
