The San Antonio Spurs have decided to waive veteran guard Cameron Payne, according to NBA inside Adrian Wojnarowski

Payne’s departure comes shortly after his arrival in a trade from the Phoenix Suns, offering him the chance to explore a bigger role with another team, ideally a contender.

ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks pointed out that the Spurs currently have 17 players under guaranteed contracts, necessitating the release of two players before the season commences.

Payne, who had a $6.5 million expiring contract, will now be seeking opportunities elsewhere, as he is ineligible to rejoin the Suns.

In a trade that transpired in July, the Suns traded Payne, along with a 2025 second-round pick and cash considerations, to the Spurs in exchange for a protected second-round pick in the 2024 draft.

Payne, 29, delivered a solid performance for the Suns last season, averaging 10.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 20.2 minutes per game.
