Sergio Hernandez’s coaching history speaks for itself. While in charge of the Argentina national team, he guided them to the finals of the most recent FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2019 and clinched a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

His tenure with the national team extended from 2005 to 2010 and then resumed from 2015 to 2021. He ultimately announced his retirement after the Tokyo Olympic Games two years ago.

He granted FIBA.basketball half an hour at the Mall of Asia Arena just before the recent Quarter-Final game between Slovenia and Canada.

What is your opinion on what coach Pesic brings to this Serbian team?

“First, I want to say that you could have another Serbian team formed of players that are not here and you would still play for the title in the World Cup,” Hernandez said. “For coach Pesic, he’s doing an incredible job. When you are that competitive, I do not care how old you are. What matters is what you do every day, your routines, your day-to-day discipline.

“He’s coaching during the season, he’s fit, he’s ready. I’m really happy for him. Coaching is a very stressful job you know. But you can see that all of the players have bought in with him. You know, watching this Serbian team, you can tell this is a Pesic team. Defense, focus, the ball going in, going out, good shot selection. On all this, he is one of the best coaches in FIBA history.”
