Latvia is rejoicing in one of their most remarkable achievements as they knocked out France at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

The thrilling victory of 88-86 included an impressive comeback of 13 points, creating an atmosphere of jubilation as the final buzzer sounded in the Indonesia Arena. The arena was filled with enthusiastic Latvian supporters who had traveled to witness the game.

You might be curious about the significance of 1935. Well, that’s when Latvia secured their first FIBA EuroBasket championship, a historic win that remains their only title to date.

Now, fast-forwarding 88 years, this Baltic nation has stepped onto the grandest stage and is making a substantial impact. Following their initial World Cup triumph, they have continued their success story by defeating France and securing a spot in the Second Round.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Davis Bertans said. “Having this many fans in the building coming from Latvia making the long trip, getting a win like this against one of the top teams in the world and feeling like we’re playing at home.

“We said we didn’t come here to participate. We want to fight for every single game and every win. The more wins we get, the better the chance that we can go even further and do something more special.”
