MANILA, Philippines — The Dominican Republic managed to withstand Italy’s gallant efforts for a come-from-behind rally, pinning an 87-82 victory of their 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Group Phase bout within Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, Aug. 27.

From being down by as much as 17 — and 16 with 4:23 remaining — the Italians unleashed a 19-6 run and went closer for a sneaky 85-82 card with 19 seconds left.

Lester Quiñones sealed the deal for the Dominicans upon nailing two free throws as Italy meanwhile bricked their two treys on the final sequence which ultimately closed their door for a complete delayed comeback.

Karl-Anthony Towns once again led the way for the Dominicana with his 24-point, 11-board double-double. He also shot 7/15 from the field with four triples and dished out five dimes.

Andres Feliz also had his strong 24-point outing, while Jean Montero logged 12 markers.

Marcos Spissu led the Italians in a losing effort with his 17 with Simone Fontecchio got 13 points.

The Dominican Republic now sits atop of Group A with a 2-0 record as they will face Angola up next on Tuesday.

Italy will look to bounce back as they encounter the Philippines on the same day.
