Isaiah Pineiro: “We didn’t come out with the energy we needed”

Puerto Rico had to overcome a large point deficit and utilized the strong performance of four players with double-doubles to defeat determined newcomers South Sudan.

This win, achieved in overtime with a final score of 101-96 in Group B, marked Puerto Rico’s start in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Despite trailing by as much as 12 points, Puerto Rico’s experience became evident in overtime, securing an important victory as they aim to progress to the Second Round for the second consecutive World Cup.

“We didn’t come out with the energy we needed,” Puerto Rico forward Isaiah Pineiro said. “Our defense wasn’t there in the first half, but we fought back and buckled down to win. That was the most important thing.”
