Wyc Grousbeck has no plans to place the Boston Celtics in the marketplace.

In an interview with Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, Grousbeck made it clear that he remains determined to his Celtic passion and not for any steep amount that he can get from selling the team.

“No thought of selling the team,” said Grousbeck. “I did this for love and for Celtic pride, not for any price tags. Period.”

Grousbeck and his group purchased the Celtics franchise for $360 million in 2003. He has been at the helm as the team’s governor since then.

Under his watch, the Celtics appeared in the NBA Finals thrice and were able to capture one championship in 2007-08 to add to their historic collection.

The league saw some groundbreaking purchases of franchises this year. In the middle of the 2022-23 season, Mat Ishbia was able to acquire the Phoenix Suns and Mercury from Robert Sarver at $4 billion in value. Marc Lasry, for his part, netted $3.5 billion upon selling his Milwaukee Bucks majority stake.

And last week, Michael Jordan managed to obtain a $3 billion valuation from his majority shares in the Charlotte Hornets.

In last year’s report published by Forbes, the Celtics’ estimated value is approximately $4 billion – the fifth most valuable franchise in the league just behind the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and the Golden State Warriors.

This is truly lucrative. But as it is, Grousbeck remains loyal to the franchise as the C’s are about to welcome new competitive beginnings starting next season with a core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis.
