The Detroit Pistons are heavily pursuing Monty Williams to become their next head coach, sources told Shams Charania and James L. Edwards III of The Athletic.
Per Shams and Edwards, the Pistons are preparing to offer a contract that worths $10MM per year for Williams, which would make him one of the highest paid coaches in the league.
A previous report has surfaced that Williams turned down the initial reach out by Detroit, but the franchise remains hoping that he’ll reconsider his coaching availability amid the fact that they’re moving with both former Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie and ex-Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee for finalist interviews.
Should Williams won’t accept the lucrative proposal, Lee is expected to be considered by the Pistons for the gig.
As pointed out, the Pistons prefer to have a voice who will hand leadership and experience to their promising core. Williams notably helped Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns to transform from a rebuilding squad into a title contender, recording a 194-115 regular season record (.629% win rate) and three trips to the playoffs including an NBA Finals run in the four-year span with them.
After another season of lowly finish, the Pistons are determined to raise their status and try to contend with Cade Cunningham set to return from his long shin injury recovery.
