Joe Mazzulla defends stand of not calling timeout in Heat’s furious second-half rally

The Boston Celtics settled for a major meltdown down the stretch of their Game 1 loss against the Miami Heat. After going up by as many as 12 in the first-half, the C’s were trembled by the Heat’s 46-point third frame markers in courtesy of a sizzling 69 percent shooting on that period alone.

The Heat went on to become victorious, 123-116, as Jimmy Butler led the way with his two-way performance.

Coach Joe Mazzulla drew plenty of flak after he didn’t call any timeouts when Miami was torching them in the third quarter. As such, he insisted that he was indeed balancing his decision of letting the team play with or even without calling for a timeout.

“I called two in the first quarter,” Mazzulla said, per MassLive’s Brian Robb.

When asked about his timeouts in the third frame, Mazzulla responded:

“Don’t call two in the first quarter. Save it for the third quarter run.”

Mazzulla was also seen upset after he threw his clip board in the midst of the Heat’s second-half rally. He complained about the Celtics’ lack of effort most especially at the offensive end.

“Lost our offensive purpose,” Mazzulla said of the period. “Lost our game plan discipline, allowed them to get out in transition, get second-chance shots, didn’t guard the three-point line.”
