Victor Wembanyama can only be candid with regards to his expected landing in the San Antonio Spurs for the 2023 NBA Draft.
With the Spurs winning the franchise-altering sweepstakes on Tuesday, the French Wunderkind is delighted that the connection between his country and San Antonio will once again get robust and extended.
“There’s a special relation between France and the Spurs because of Tony [Parker] and Boris [Diaw],” Wembanyama said. “I know half of the country, maybe if not, the whole country wanted the Spurs to have the first pick.”
“I was looking and everyone was happy, so I was too.”
For the third time in franchise history, the Spurs managed to strike luck in the draft lottery. They previously selected David Robinson (1986) and Tim Duncan (1997), as both legendary big men went on to help them establish one of the most successful and notable golden dynasties of the league in the 21st century.
The Spurs finished the 2022-23 season with the Conference-worst 22-60 record, owning the 14 percent chance to draw the top pick. As such, their season of tanking came in fruition with the most hyped prospect ever set to empower them starting next year.
“Not to brag about it but I knew what was going to happen and I actually recorded myself, saying it this morning, walking to practice,” Wembanyama noted about the Spurs being his team. “Yeah, universe told me. Dreams, feelings, it happens sometimes.
“But it never – it is never wrong. It’s always right.”
