In wake of their dismissal of Monty Williams, the Phoenix Suns appear to have one significant target already to fill their head coaching opening.

League insider Marc Stein reported Saturday that there are expectations that the Suns will explore possibilities of trying to lure away Ty Lue out of the L.A. Clippers.

Lue has been the Clippers’ bench boss in the last three seasons, who led them towards their first Conference Finals appearance ever last 2020-21.

But the mentor has been drawing noise and chatter throughout the league this season that he may potentially leave the L.A. camp, as his Clippers team is yet to achieve that full availability – specifically both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George – which hinders their maximization of seizing a successful championship chase.

Following the Clippers’ first-round exit against the Suns, Lue insisted that he will still remain as the team’s head coach amid the rumors tagged to him. President Lawrence Frank also expressed the same assurance in the club’s season exit interview.

Motivated by their second-round elimination against the Nuggets on Thursday, the Suns are poised to be aggressive in the offseason in preparation for next campaign with owner Mat Ishbia taking the control. The duo of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker remains primed to lead, while there are speculations already that they may use both Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton as trade chips to improve.

Lue, who was also reportedly on the radar of the Milwaukee Bucks’ top coaching search, got ties with Suns President James Jones dating back from their historic championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
