Real Madrid to host Boston Celtics

MADRID, July 13, 2015 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Euroleague Basketball announced today that Euroleague Basketball’s Real Madrid will play a preseason game on October 8 against the Boston Celtics in the Spanish capital as part of NBA Global Games Madrid 2015 presented by BBVA.

The game sees the 17-time NBA champion Boston Celtics take on the nine-time Euroleague and 31-time Spanish League champions Real Madrid at the Barclaycard Center.

The Celtics are led by led by Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart and Isaiah Thomas, while Real Madrid features Spanish national team players Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull, Felipe Reyes and Sergio Rodríguez.

The game is a rematch of the 1988 contest that saw the late Drazen Petrovic and Fernando Martin, the first Spanish player ever in the NBA, face Celtics legends Larry Bird and Danny Ainge, the team’s current President of Basketball Operations. This will be the seventh game for Real Madrid against an NBA franchise after previous games in 1988, 1993, 2007, 2009 and two games in 2012.

Prior to the game in Madrid, the Celtics will play three-time Euroleague champion and 26-time Italian League champion Olimpia Milano on October 6 at Milan’s Mediolanum Forum. These two matchups will mark the Celtics’ seventh and eighth games in Europe.

In addition to this game, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Olimpia Milano will play exhibition games against one another in Chicago and New York City as part of Euroleague Basketball World Tour 2015. More games on Euroleague Basketball World Tour 2015 will be announced soon. Last season saw six Euroleague teams compete in 12 games in nine countries on four continents as part of the World Tour.

NBA Global Games Europe will also feature a variety of interactive fan activities and NBA Cares community events that will bring the NBA experience to fans across both cities. The game will be supported by a variety of partners and be available to fans globally on television, digital, and social media. The game will also be aired live on Canal+.
