Former NBA big man and University of North Carolina star Eric Montross is undergoing cancer treatment, his family announced.

Montross’ family relayed their own statement via UNC, thanking the widespread support of many towards the retired cager’s ongoing diagnosis.

“We are all touched by the responses our entire family has received since the news became public,” the family stated. “Your support is more than appreciated; it is welcomed as a necessary part of beating cancer one day at a time. Our family is dealing with Eric’s diagnosis head-on – the only way we know how. And we are all in this fight together.”

Montross, 51, helped the Tar Heels in winning the 1993 NCAA title. He was a two-time Consensus second-team All-American, and his No. 00 was retired by the collegiate program.

He was the ninth overall pick of the 1994 NBA Draft and went on to play in six different teams in an eight-year span.

In 465 career games played in the league, Montross averaged 4.5 points and 4.6 boards.
