Sasha Djordjevic will stay with the Serbian national side after agreeing a deal that runs through to 2019.

The news comes less than a week after Djordevic was announced as the new head coach of Panathinaikos.

The 47-year-old took over the reigns from Dusan Ivkovic after Eurobasket in 2013 and since taking over, Djordjevic guided Serbia to a surprising silver medal finish at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Serbia’s style of play and general enthusiasm through their success in Spain last summer was down to Djordjevic’s practices and way of coaching. He instilled a level of confidence that the departing Ivkovic wanted his successor to be.

Thanks to Djordjevic’s methods and coaching techniques, Serbia are amongst one of the front runners for this year’s Eurobasket, where they play co-hosts Germany, Spain, Turkey, Italy and Iceland in Berlin.

Before retiring in 2005, Djordjevic was considered one of Serbia’s top point guards. He drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer against Joventut Badalona to help Partizan win the Euroleague title in 1992 and be recognised as one of the game’s greats thanks to his clutch effort.

Djordjevic has also got FIBA World Cup gold and Olympic silver medals to his name as well as three Eurobasket gold medals and one bronze.
