Atlanta Hawks forward Pero Antic has told Macedonian media that he will not represent his nation at this summer’s Eurobasket.

The 32-year-old former Euroleague winner, who was originally picked in FYR of Macedonia’s preliminary squad, has decided to withdraw so that he can focus on next season as he is now a free agent.

Antic has stated that the players that helped the nation qualify for Eurobasket 2015 should be on the final roster.

It will be a massive loss for the Macedonians as they have to prepare for the Olympic qualifying event without their team captain. Antic himself was not exactly a household name in basketball until Eurobasket 2011 when he was one of many stars that guided FYR of Macedonia to a surprise fourth-placed finish in the tournament, held in Lithuania.

Antic captained the side two years in Slovenia, but was unable to steer them past the first round.

Now, without their leader, FYR of Macedonia must compete at Eurobasket without Antic. They will be based in Zagreb, where they face off against Georgia, Netherlands, Greece, Slovenia and co-hosts Croatia in Group C.
