The Detroit Pistons have been granted a disabled player exception by the NBA on Cade Cunningham’s season-ending surgery, per James L. Edwards of The Athletic.
Cunningham took the procedure last December to promote healing in his left tibial stress fracture, as he is set to resume his basketball activities in the 2023 offseason.
A DPE allows an over-the-cap team to sign players in light of a player that will be sidelined for at least June 15 because of an injury.
The exception will be worth half of the salary of the particular injured player or the amount of a midlevel exception.
As such, Cunningham’s salary for this season is worth over $10.5MM in value, giving Detroit’s DPE worth around $5.276MM.
