Kyrie Irving is keeping his patience intact, with a probable long-term partnership with the Brooklyn Nets floating around in his intentions.
Per Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Irving is seeking to hammer a contract extension with the Nets, but discussions are yet to materialize with the franchise.
“Around Kyrie and staying with the Nets? I have reached out to the Nets regarding this,” Irving’s agent, Shetellia Irving, told Haynes. “We have had no significant conversations to date. The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension, which means the ball is in the Nets’ court to communicate now if their desire is the same.”
Irving, 30, opted to exercise his $36.9 million player option for this season last summer, thus making him an expiring asset in the aftermath of 2022-23.
Should he not be able to reach an agreement with the Nets, Irving will head towards the market as an unrestricted free agent, with some teams possibly hunting for his service.
The All-Star guard is eligible to ink a maximum deal of around $200 million in four years, but it truly depends on the camp of Brooklyn if they will commit to him fully for years to come. Irving notably created controversies since becoming a Net in 2019, from his COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy that limited him to play as well as his notorious promotion of the antisemitic film Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America!
Irving is averaging 26.7 points, 5.1 boards, and 5.0 assists this season while shooting 48/37/90 in three scoring areas.
Amid being a component of the Nets’ sluggish and embattled start this season, Irving still helped the club to make a dramatic turnaround. Right now, Brooklyn sits at the top-four spot of the East with a 29-17 record.
