EuroBasket Women 2015 round up (Second Round, day 2)

The opening day of Group F action in Gyor saw two closely fought encounters plus a dominant display from the holders as the second round of Eurobasket Women is in full swing.

Serbia got the better of the Slovak Republic 76-74 in a relentless back and forth battle, decided in the final five seconds.

A tough lay-up from Sonja Petrovic settled the game in the end, but with the cock still ticking, Serbia still had to defend for the final two seconds as Zuzana Zirkova let fly from half-court.

Thankfully for Serbia it rimmed out.

Petrovic top scored for Serbia with 15 points. Kristi Toliver led all scorers with 23 for the unlucky Slovakians.

Lithuania stunned Russia by coming back from 18-points down, late in the third quarter to end up winning 78-74.

Monika Grigalauskyte and Marina Solopova were introduced into the action together a minute from the end of the third period, with their team trailing by 17 points at that juncture. Their extra energy and willingness to be aggressive sparked the spectacular rescue mission, firing Russia into numerous errors, including 19 turnovers overall.

Gintare Petronyte and Kamile Nacickaite led the way in the scoring stakes with 20 and 19 points respectively.

Eurobasket Women holders Spain, unlike Lithuania and Serbia before them had little trouble in their opening second round victory as they brushed aside Croatia 95-52.

Already with this loss, Croatia face an uphill struggle to qualify for the next round as they were outclassed by the ruthless Spaniards who scored the first 13 points of the game and never looked back.

Marta Xargay was terrific with 16 points and a superb seven steals for Spain, while Astou Ndour claimed a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
