EuroBasket Women 2015 round up (day 5)

The group stages of Eurobasket Women are completed as Romania not only bids farewell to the tournament but also says goodbye as hosts with the focus of the event moving on to Gyor and Debrecen in Hungary.

GROUP A

France finished unbeaten in Group A as they ended Montenegro’s unblemished streak by beating them 79-67 in Timisoara.

The French led to start to finish in what was their strongest display of the tournament so far, led by 25 points and eight rebounds from Sandrine Gruda.

With the Ukraine having completed their round of games, it was left to Czech Republic to pick up something from their last game and they did just that, by beating co-hosts Romania 82-71.

The Romanians finish Eurobasket Women with a 0-4 record, but despite being winless, they can take comfort in the performances that they have produced.

Alena Hanusova had a game-high 24 points for the Czechs.

Through: France, Montenegro, Czech Republic. Out: Ukraine, Romania.

GROUP B

In a tight finish for second place in Group B, Greece’s 82-57 loss to pool winners Belarus didn’t matter as Turkey beat Italy to seal qualification and send the Italians packing from Oradea.

Belarus continued their dominance with a resounding victory over Greece, thanks largely to great ball movement, resulting in 28 assists and smart all-round play. Mariya Papova had 20 points for the Belorussians.

The game was marred though by a power outage, that caused the game to be delayed by several minutes.

Turkey’s 50-44 success over Italy in the end sent Greece through, as well as the Turks, despite not being at their best in the four group games played.

Nevriye Yilmaz led the way for Turkey with 12 points.

Through: Belarus, Turkey, Greece. Out: Italy, Poland.

GROUP C

Russia topped Group C thanks to a comfortable 77-53 win over Serbia in Szombathely.

Both teams were assured of qualification to the second round with the mere formality of placement required.

Evgenia Belyakova top scored with 19 points for Russia but center Irina Osipova’s 10 points and 13 assists, something seen as rare for big players was a major contributor.

Russia’s win meant that Croatia advanced to the second round, which was more than deserved considering the injury concerns that they had before the tournament even started.

And the Croatians ended Group C in style by beating Great Britain 76-70 as the Brits end their campaign without a win.

Iva Borovic once again put in another brilliant shooting display with 23 points for Croatia.

Through: Russia, Serbia, Croatia. Out: Latvia, Great Britain.

GROUP D

Holders Spain finished unbeaten in Group D as they put Sweden to the sword 64-60 in Sopron.

Sweden are eliminated thanks to this loss as Anna Cruz’s 13 points helped the Spanish to victory.

Co-hosts Hungary signed off from Eurobasket Women with a win as they beat Slovak Republic 86-74 in front of 1,300 celebratory Hungarian supporters.

Allie Quigley top scored with a game-high 26 points for the winners who finish the tournament with their heads held high.

Through: Spain, Slovak Republic, Lithuania. Out: Sweden, Hungary.
