A second round picture is starting to form as teams are beginning to prolong their stays and the others are getting ready to pack their bags.
GROUP A
Montenegro and France have progressed to round two after both recorded wins in Timisoara.
The Montenegrins looked comfortable to start but needed a strong fourth quarter to see off Ukraine 84-71.
Leading 53-35 early in the third quarter and playing assured basketball, Montenegro looked in control, but Ukraine, admirably, burst into life and an 11-0 run cut the gap to 65-62 with 11 minutes left.
But a 15-4 burst ruthlessly killed off their chances as fatigue on the Ukraine players set in.
Angelica Robinson led the way with 18 points for Montenegro. Alina Iagupova led all scorers with 33 for Ukraine.
France were by no means convincing, but scored a 76-67 win over co-hosts Romania as they are eliminated.
When Claudio Pop buried a three-pointer at the start of the fourth, Romania, and their supporters, sensed an astonishing upset when they led 63-56 – but Les Bleues had an answer – 15 consecutive points later and they were en route to victory.
Paoline Salagnac scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth to help the 2013 Eurobasket Women silver-medallists.
GROUP B
Turkey defeated previously unbeaten Greece 61-50 as both teams now hold 2-1 records heading into the final round of games in Oradea.
Turkey’s naturalised player Lara Sanders had an excellent all-round game with an 18-point and 12-rebound double-double, plus she provided excellent defence with her length causing Greece problems in the paint.
Both teams can qualify for the next round if they win their remaining games. Turkey face Italy, while Greece square off against already qualified Belarus.
But Italy can also qualify should they win. They secured their first victory of the campaign, beating Poland 66-55, which meant the Poles leave Eurobasket Women winless.
Playing in her 100th match for Italy, Giorgia Sottana hit a bunch of clutch shots and finished with a game high 16 points.
GROUP C
Serbia booked their ticket to the second phase after easing past Great Britain 76-54 in Szombathely.
Missing key players like Jo Leedham is hurting GB as for the third consecutive game, they couldn’t get past the 60 points mark, and against an in-form Serbian outfit, your chances of getting the job done are slim.
Sonja Petrovic led the way with a classy 17 points and Danielle Page finished with a double-double of 11 points and 12 boards.
Great Britain’s day was made worse with Latvia upsetting Russia 68-62, which kept them in contention and sent GB home.
Veterans Gunta Basko-Melnbarde and Anete Jekabsone combined for 38 points with the latter leading the way with 20 points as Latvia recorded a first ever win over the Russians.
GROUP D
Co-hosts Hungary, like Romania have been eliminated after they lost 69-46 to holders Spain in Sopron.
Trailing by just three points, heading into the final quarter, Hungary were no doubt in contention, but the Spanish held the Hungarians to five points, while putting up 25 of their own, as they advanced to the next round
An impressive double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds from Alba Torrens was enough to seal victory.
In probably the game of the tournament so far, Lithuania hung on to beat Sweden 70-68 and book their place to round two.
Sweden started well with Stefanie Yderstrom hitting a trio of triples in a spell that saw her side open up a 29-21 advantage.
But Lithuania’s response was vital. A 22-0 run gave the Baltic side a lead they would not relinquish despite the nervy finish, where Frida Eldebrink missed a turnaround jumper on the buzzer that could have forced overtime.
Santa Okockyte led the Lithuanians with 19 points.
