Steve Kerr on Michael Jordan being named after new MVP trophy: “He was the obvious choice”

Steve Kerr has no other second thoughts if the great Michael Jordan is truly deserving enough to be named after the newest design of the NBA MVP plum.

Kerr, who had a legitimate close-up look at Jordan’s greatness upon their shared glory in the Chicago Bulls’ second three-peat, made it known that the basketball legend is much deserving of the recognition.

“I think it means a lot to him. This is a guy who went to the Finals six times, won all six times, and won Finals MVP all six times,” Kerr said, per Rob Schafer of NBC Sports. “He was the obvious choice if you were going to name the trophy after someone.”

With his unmatched competitive spirit and the sheer desire to win, Jordan charged the Bulls towards a sports dynasty in the golden era of the 90s decade, leading the city of Chicago towards the promised land for six seasons. This tremendous feat alone ultimately convinced the majority that he is the greatest player who ever graced the floor and held a basketball.

By individual accolades, Jordan is also off the charts. He garnered five MVP trophies together with 14 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA selections, nine All-Defense honors, and an overwhelming 10 scoring titles in his 14-year illustrious career.

For the Golden State Warriors mentor, with all the accomplishments that Jordan managed to carve, the legend can only reflect and take a look back on the old days of his reign as the league’s singular and undisputed force.

“I think there is a certain amount of reflection that all of us go through. And it’s fun to be able to think back to the good times,” Kerr said. “It’s an incredible honor to have your name attached to something like that.”

With a new model set to be given annually, Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic will accept the first MVP trophy that honors Jordan. The Serbian sensation capped off a back-to-back MVP campaign last 2021-22.
