Evan Fournier keeping optimism, belief from being unplayable for Knicks under Tom Thibodeau: ‘I always try to put myself in other people’s shoes’

Evan Fournier isn’t taking his absence from play for the New York Knicks as too much personal. But he admitted that his demotion from being out of the rotation player this season is a tough pill to swallow.

“How hard is it? It’s not easy. I’ll tell you that,” the 30-year-old Fournier said after not playing a single second for the first time in the Knicks’ win over the Jazz on Tuesday night, via New York Post’s Zach Braziller.

From being a key rotational piece, Fournier took a slide down to the Knicks’ rotation. The same goes for Quentin Grimes, but the young swingman can at least direct this adjustment due to his nagging sore left foot.

For Fournier, he is putting it all in the hands of Tom Thibodeau, citing that the reduced role could be a beneficial move for the team’s success. Currently, the Knicks are holding a 7-7 card while still fighting swirling doubts about their competitive capabilities going deep through the season.

“I mean, you know I always try to put myself in other people’s shoes. Thibs is trying to find a solution,” Fournier said. “I don’t think he made that decision because he [doesn’t] like me or anything like it’s a personal thing. He just wants to win, man. He does whatever he thinks is best. I can argue whether that’s good or not, sure.”

Throughout 13 games this season, Fournier is averaging 6.9 points, the lowest since his rookie year in 2012-2013. He is also shooting a career-low 34.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from long distance.

Amid the rocky beginnings, the French veteran is keeping his composure intact for a probable opportunity to enter soon.

“I mean, I’ve got to keep that mindset [this can change] for sure,” he said. “If I’m thinking about staying on the bench for the rest of the season it’s going to be awful.

“Mindset is always the same. Do your work every day and live [with] the result.”
