Brooklyn Nets releases statement about Kyrie Irving, condemns star guard for promotion of antisemitic film

The Brooklyn Nets issued their statement on Friday via The Athletic in light of another controversy made by Kyrie Irving.

Following the team’s loss against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, Irving took a swipe on Twitter and Instagram, posting an Amazon link for a 2018 film, “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America.”

This move dipped the All-star guard into hot water, as he received major backlash on social media. An article by Rolling Stone pointed out that the movie is considered antisemitic on nature.

Provided below is the statement provided by the Nets franchise to The Athletic in light of Irving’s questionable action:

“The Brooklyn Nets strongly condemn and have no tolerance for the promotion of any form of hate speech. We believe that in these situations, our first action must be open, honest dialogue. We thank those, including the ADL, who have been supportive during this time.”

On his part, team owner Joe Tsai expressed his disappointment on Irving via tweet, noting that he intends to sit down with him to discuss the issue and consequences of the promotion he made.

Irving has been the focal point of controversy in the NBA for the past few years. He notably spewed conspiracy regarding his beliefs on ‘Flat Earth’ and the ‘New World Order.’

Last season, he drew public attention for sitting down in the majority of Brooklyn games for his hesitancy to take a COVID-19 shot, which perhaps cost the team its title hopes.

The Nets are currently sitting with a 1-4 record to start this 2022-23 season. Irving is currently averaging 29.6 points, 5.4 boards, 4.4 assists in 45.4 percent shooting.
