Suns negotiating with Cam Johnson for a potential extension

The Phoenix Suns are working to retain wingman Cam Johnson for years to come.

As relayed by Brian Windhorst in his appearance on Monday’s segment of NBA Today, the Suns are currently negotiating with Johnson, wherein they are interested to be committed on a long-term plan and avoid the restricted free agency scenario similar last time with Deandre Ayton.

“Also they are negotiating, from what I’ve been told, with Cam Johnson on a contract extension. Now that wouldn’t effect this year’s salary, that would be for down the line, but it does indicate they’re looking to invest long-term in another player and avoid another restricted free agency situation like they had with Deandre Ayton last year.”

Suns GM James Jones already said that they are working to have an extension with Johnson. It remains yet to be seen when the hammering from both sides will come before the season tip-off.

Johnson is set to hit the 2022-2023 season as a contract year. He remains eligible for a rookie scale extension, but should the Phoenix fail to reach an agreement with him before the campaign starts, he’ll become a restricted FA next summer.

Johnson had a productive showing last season averaging career highs in points (12.5), rebounds (4.1), assists (1.5) field goal shooting (46 percent) and three-point efficiency (42.5) in 66 games (16 starts).
