NBA considers lowering draft age eligibility to 18 – Shams Charania

Soon the most talented players could go to the NBA straight from high school. According NBA insider Shams Charania, the league and the National Basketball Players Association is in serious talks on new items for potential Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Among them is lowering draft age compatibility from 19 to 18. Some of the league’s top stars such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett and many more were drafted straight from high school.

Now most players attend college for one year to reach the age of 19 and become draft eligible. Few choose to play professionally overseas or join G League side Ignite.

Current Collective Bargaining Agreement runs through the 2023-2024 season, but both sides have opt-outs after this season.

Therefore, theoretically the new CBA could be in effect during the 2023-2024 season. If the draft age is lowered for the 2023 NBA Draft, it could open the door to the league for LeBron James’ eldest son Bronny.
