Report: NBA slaps Robert Sarver one-year suspension as owner of Suns, Mercury; to comply on workplace conduct training

The NBA hands down a one-year suspension against Robert Sarver from his ownership duties for both the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury as announced in a press release this Tuesday.

Other than following the suspension, Sarver will pay a $10 million fine and is obligated to attend a training program focused on respect and proper workplace conduct.

These resolutions came following the ending of the league’s almost a year investigation of racist, sexist and homophobic allegations against Sarver based from ESPN’s Baxter Holmes report last November. From 320 current and ex-Suns employees interviewed and examination of 80,000 documents, it was found out that he spoke: N-word at least 5 times when recounting statement of others; made “many” sex-related, inappropriate comments about physical appearance of females; inappropriate physical conduct toward men and; engaged in harsh treatment by yelling and cursing against his employees.

As told by the NBA, the $10 million fine that will be settled by Sarver will be placed in the charitable works and organizations that tackles race and gender-based issues in and outside the workplace.

Upon his one-year suspension as the governor of the Suns and Mercury, Sarver is ineligible to attend any NBA or WNBA games and will be prohibited to attend on both team’s practice facilities and get involved in their basketball operations. He also has to follow the required meetings about appropriate workplace treatment.

Sarver purchased the Suns and Mercury franchises in 2004.
