The Dallas Mavericks took their shot in hopes of gaining Collin Sexton from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
But their engagement of sign-and-trade possibilities didn’t pan out due to the “valuable” consideration of the Cavs in return for Sexton and the Mavericks’ inefficiency of substantial assets, as reported by cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor in their Wine & Gold Talk podcast of Hayden Grove.

“The Cavs have had conversations with Dallas about a sign-and-trade for Collin Sexton,” Fedor said. “But if you’re talking about a sign-and-trade, the Cavs need something back that is going to be valuable to them. And neither the [Utah] Jazz nor the Mavericks have the pieces that the Cavs would want back in a sign and trade for Collin.
The Mavs may have tried to pull it off in order to address their backcourt hole from the Jalen Brunson departure, but the Cavs are looking determined to maximize Sexton’s every single value.
Sexton currently stands as a restricted free-agent, and there’s no latest deal materializing yet for both him and the Cavaliers.
One obvious factor is that the two aren’t meeting on their desired asking price. As stated by Fedor from last month, Sexton is looking for a big paycheck and hesitant to accept the proposed three-year deal of the Cavs near around $40 million, while this amount offered is being considered by the franchise as justifiable enough for them to stick on.
The Cavs have their reason to be wary of their contract situation with Sexton. The former Alabama standout is coming off from a torn meniscus injury last November and was then shelved for the remainder of 2021-2022 season in order to recover. Other than that, they’ve already found the floor general of their future in Darius Garland, who’ve already locked a five-year, $193MM rookie max extension this offseason.
Sexton’s camp has shown openness to accept the qualifying offer for the upcoming basketball year, which will put him to an unrestricted free-agent status next season and be allowed to sign on whichever team he wants.
It remains uncertain when this calm waters from both Sexton and the Cavs will end. Given that they are a promising team to further emerge, the Cavs will truly seize every single opportunity from the explosive guard and approach this situation eagerly enough.
