Newcastle Eagles win seventh BBL crown in ten years

A typically powerful offensive display carried Newcastle Eagles to a win against Giants and to successive BBL titles.

There were few signs of nerves at Sport Central and ultimately nothing but cheers and celebrations as the party got started in earnest for Esh Group Eagles Newcastle, who won the BBL Championship after a 107-97 victory against Manchester Giants.

When it mattered most, the title-winners had an array of big performances from their players  as they eased to a memorable victory, to add yet more silverware to their already bulging trophy cabinet.

Perhaps needing a strong start to keep any worries of slipping up at bay, the Eagles delivered a slick first-quarter and barely missed a beat as they poured in 32 points during the opening period to record a double-digit advantage.

That was mainly due to the British brotherly duo of Stu and Andy Thomson, who caught fire early and never looked back as they combined for 20 points in the opening ten minutes and eventually went on to collect a shared 45 points.

It was still an 11 point margin at half-time and with Rahmon Fletcher pulling the strings to great effect, the Eagles never looked like allowing their coveted title from slipping away.

While Manchester hung around with some nice contributions from the likes of Stefan Gill who finished with 25 points, the Eagles had too much firepower and veteran Charles Smith came alive in the second half to help seal the deal.

Smith eventually top-scored with 27 points, while Fletcher grabbed a brilliant double-double of 16 points and 13 assists as the Eagles skipped with joy over the finishing line to the adulation of the home supporters.
